new sound card! almost.

I’m starting to work on rough drafts for the album, and since my Mobile Pre is quite noisy and fragile, it’s time to buy a new sound card.

To be fair, when I first bought the Mobile Pre, I was broke and in a jam, and it was the cheapest thing they had that could do what I needed to do, which was record something from my electric piano and a microphone. It’s not terrible for a quick and dirty job, but if you actually care about sound quality then not your best bet by a long shot.

This was my first time going through the process of researching and comparing models, and it was very time consuming. If you’re going through something similar, the best link I have found is definitely this article at TweakHeadz. It’s straightforward and informative and doesn’t pretend to know what’s best for you, but will certainly give you the tools you need to make the decision.

So finally after doing all that reading and looking around, I decided on the Edirol Fa-66. Since nobody in Montreal actually carries the thing, I had to order online, which is fine by me. I don’t have it yet so I can’t tell you much more than that, but I’ll keep you posted.

Oh, and funny story – after I’d reached the “pretty sure” stage in this process, I decided to look for some reviews, and stumbled across this one, which turned out to be written by a friend of mine. Too funny. I mentioned it to him, and he said the ones at Presonus are pretty good too. So there you go. Hope that’s helpful to someone.
